First published September 5, 2012; doi:10.1152/jn.00701.2012.—Thalamic input to the neocortex is crucial for sensory perception and constitutes the basis of complex awake behavior. Connections within the neocortex play an important role in internally generated neural activity, which is considered critical for memory retrieval and for the generation of imagery in our dreams. Modulatory neurotransmitters, such as noradrenaline and acetylcholine, gate information transmission in the brain. Favero et al. (J Neurophysiol 108: 1010–1024, 2012) show that modulators differentially facilitate thalamocortical relative to intracortical transmission in the input layers of cortex.

Effect of crude Venom of Odonthobuthus doriae scorpion in cell culture using ion channel modulators

Scorpion venom toxicity is one of the major medical concerns from old years, due to its influence on human activities and health. From many years ago a lot of researches established to examine different aspects of venom toxicity and its effects on different organs. During these years researchers are doing more specific studies on the cytotoxicity of scorpion venom. In Iran, Odonthobuthus doriae...

Developing Persian version of Sensory Gating Inventory ‎‎(SGI): Validity and Reliability‎

Introduction: Sensory Gating Inventory (SGI) measures behavioral aspects of Sensory Gating (SG). It is a filtering mechanism of brain that prevents irrelevant sensory inputs from entering into higher cortex information processing. It modifies sensitivity to sensory stimuli. Abnormal SG leads to overloading of information into cortex and brain dysfunction. Electrophysiological techniques cannot ...

How to discriminate conclusively among different models of decision making?

A popular and successful class of decision-making models (the "evidence accumulator" models) has been recently challenged by a new hypothesis called the urgency-gating model. Hawkins et al. (J Neurophysiol 114: 40-47, 2015) used a sophisticated curve-fitting procedure to show that these models are discriminable and thus testable in constant evidence tasks. In this Neuro Forum article I raise po...

P2: Neocortex and Memory

The human prefrontal cortex differs from all other mammals: the seat of complex cognition, abstract thinking, planning and future forecasting, and behavioral inhibition. Using our prefrontal cortex is a significant energy drain on the body, so despite its impressive capabilities, it’s daily capacity is limited. Some researchers estimate a mere 2-3 hours per day of activity depletes the pr...
